Tilting back
On the longest night of the year at CERES we celebrate the Winter Solstice.
Two events over two nights, a family-friendly evening and an after dark celebration, both culminating in a spectacular fire sculpture finale to welcome the return of the light.
Tickets went on sale Thursday night. By Saturday around lunchtime Solstice Festival Director, Melissa Lawson, messaged to say Family Night had sold out in record time with the After Dark event expected to sell out sometime in the coming week.
What is it in a city filled with entertainment options that draws us outside to gather around a bonfire in the cold and dark to mark the South Pole’s tilt back toward the sun?
At CERES we’re noticing more and more people want to reconnect with the Earth and community, and it’s not just record numbers at our Solstice and Harvest festivals – it’s oversubscribed nature-based leadership courses, bush kinder playgroups, volunteer spots at Brunswick East and Joe’s Garden.
And it’s not just Melbourne either; a quick search reveals solstice events proliferating across the country in all shapes and sizes – From the thirty thousand people at Winter Magic Festival in Katoomba to the few dozen who will take the plunge in Penguin at Tasmania’s annual Loaves and Fishes Solstice Swim.
I don’t know if it’s just a deep human need or an online related nature deficit but increasingly people are finding themselves irresistibly drawn together outside.
Take Victoria’s Bush Kinders; growing from eight groups in 2014 to over two hundred today. The same is happening with Queensland’s Nature Playgroups and WA’s Forest Schools, all report not enough places to meet demand.
It’s coming up in our health services too – in recent Beyond Blue and Black Dog surveys more and more people rank time in nature as their most important self-care strategy.
And don’t get me started on birdwatching – it’s a national epidemic! It’d be easier to count the number of people who haven’t recently found themselves with a severe case of the twitches.
Anyway, if you’re feeling a planetary shift and the need to gather, be quick there’s still a few spots left at Saturday’s After Dark event – you can find tickets here.
