  • Can I order Fair Fruit at work?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

CERES Fair Food offers a Fair Fruit at Work service. We can supply organic or convention fruit per piece for delivery once or twice a week, depending on your requirements. For pricing information, please feel free to call us or email our General Manager with your inquiry at chris@ceresfairfood.org.au or visit our Fair Fruit at Work Page for more details.

  • Why is there is no pick up point near me?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

It may just be that we have overlooked a region. It may also be that we have not yet been able to find a suitable Food Host. Whatever the reason, we're always open to suggestions of where to open up a pick up point. Feel free to email foodhosts@ceresfairfood.org.au to request that we look into it. Don't forget to give us your postcode and the nearest landmark so we can ascertain the specific area you are inquiring about.

Alternatively, we have a carbon neutral home delivery service option which goes to most places in Melbourne and parts of Greater Melbourne. Visit our Delivery Page and use our search tool to see if we deliver to your postcode.

  • Do you offer home delivery?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Yes! Shop as usual, and at checkout simply select the home delivery option. The cost per delivery is $6.75, which includes GST and the cost of high quality carbon offsets. So, no matter how you choose to get your organic fruit and vegetables, you'll still be contributing to a healthier and more sustainable food system. If you live further out, the cost can be $12.95. You can check which price category you fall into by visiting our Delivery Page.

You must order by Sunday midnight for a delivery on Wednesday between 11am-7pm.

  • Why don't I get to choose what goes into my box?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

You can build your own box by selecting individual items from the Extra Fruit and Veg section of our webstore. These individually ordered items will be packed into a brown grocery bag or box, depending on the quantity you order, and labelled with your name.

We don't allow customisation of our set boxes because our 'mystery' boxes, as some like to call them, are the most fun and cost-effective way of providing our members with affordable, high quality, local, organic produce all over Melbourne. We buy on the day to ensure you receive the freshest of produce at the best price, but sometimes, at late notice, certain items are suddenly unavailable.

For instance, a storm may prevent a farmer from coming into town to deliver, or the expected quantity or quality of a particular fruit or vegetable we planned to pack is simply not there. The set box allows us to substitute for another similar 100% certified organic fruit or vegetable that we think you'll like just as much.

Unlike some other organic food delivery businesses, we understand that our customers buy organic for their own personal and varied reasons and so we don't ever substitute for conventional produce, ever.

  • Does it cost anything to be a member?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

There is no cost involved in becoming a member. We call our customers 'members' because we like it better than 'customer,' and because the Food Host system tends to make us all feel a little more part of a community.

We do not lock people into a subscription, where you would need to buy each week. There is a function when you order items from the shop that allows you to make recurring orders depending on your needs but you do not have to use it. If you do wish to add an item to your cart "as a standing order," tick the checkbox under the "add to cart" button. You will be able to set up an autorenew for that item.

  • Do I have to buy each week?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

No, many of our members simply buy when they want to. If you do wish to order weekly, fortnightly or monthly on a recurring basis, all you have to do is tick the box "add to cart as a standing order." A pop up will come up asking you which date you would like the deliveries to start, how many of those items you would like for each delivery, how often you'd like the item, and for how long you want the order to recur. For instance, two loaves of organic bread, every two weeks for 10 weeks, starting today. You can do this for any item in the store including the produce boxes.

Whether you have recurring orders or you order as you go, you'll get reminders via email and/or sms (depending on the preferences set in your "profile") that will make sure you don't forget to order before cutoff. Depending on which Food Host you choose to collect from, the day and time you must order by will be different. If you choose to pick up on a Tuesday, you must order by Sunday 11:59pm. For a Thursday pick, it's Tuesday at 11:59pm. This is when orders get processed and monies deducted. After cutoff you can no longer make changes to your order for the coming delivery.

As long as the items ordered have not yet been processed (changes must be made before cutoff), you can login, look at My Orders and delete/add any items.

  • Can I change my pick up location (Food Host) for just one week?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

From the My Orders Page you can change your Food Host for any given week without permanently changing your regular pick up location. From your Profile Page you can permanently "change food host" and this will change your pick up location, day and time for all existing and all future orders.

  • 2.Produce and Products
  • Where does the CERES Fair Food produce come from?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

We source our produce from local Victorian farmers (with the exception of bananas), beginning with CERES own Harding Street market garden. Our aim is to have all our produce supplied by farmers that we have a direct relationship with, so we can guarantee them support and pay them a fairer price for their hard work.

We are always working on establishing new relationships with farmers. To ensure supply in the meantime, we do source some of our organic produce from the Footscray wholesale market from Victorian suppliers.

If you are an organic farmer or have other ethical, organic, or fair trade products you think our customers would like, please email our Webstore Manager or, for fresh produce sales, email our General Manager

To see a list of the farmers who supply to us, visit the Suppliers Page of the website.

  • Can I choose what goes in my box?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

The short answer is that you cannot customise our set boxes but that you can "build you own box" by selecting individual items from our extra fruit and veg section in the online shop. As of September 2012, these will be packed into boxes or bags with any other groceries you've ordered, and labelled with your name.

The longer answer is that seasonal set boxes (or 'mystery' boxes, as some like to call them) are the most fun and cost-effective way of providing our members with affordable, high quality, local, organic produce all over Melbourne. We buy on the day to ensure you receive the freshest of produce at the best price, but sometimes at late notice certain items are suddenly unavailable.

For instance, a storm may prevent a farmer from coming into town to deliver or the expected quantity or quality of a particular fruit or vegetable we intended to pack. The set box allows us to substitute for another similar 100% certified organic fruit or vegetable that we think you'll like just as much. Unlike some other organic delivery businesses, we understand that our customers buy organic for their own personal and varied reasons and so we don't ever substitute for conventional produce, ever.

  • How do I know my produce is truly organic?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

We source our produce only from certified organic growers or growers that are in conversion to organic. Organic certification is an accreditation process that assures products have been produced without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilisers, growth regulators, and antibiotics in the case of animal production. An organic certifier independently inspects, assesses and reviews a product in accordance with national organic production standards.

”In conversion” to organic is a certification assessment during the period of transformation between conventional and organic production. These production systems have followed the organic Standards for at least one year but have not yet achieved full organic certification. A minimum period of three years must pass before a production system can achieve full organic certification.

You can see a list of our suppliers on the Suppliers Page of our website.

  • What does it mean to eat locally?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Local or regional food systems present an alternative to the current global model. There are many benefits of being what they call a "locavore," or someone who prefers to consume local, rather than imported, food.

There are many reasons people eat locally. Some people do it to support the local agricultural and food industries. Others because the food produced tastes so much better. And others think it's most important to reduce food miles or the distance food travels from farm gate to consumer plate, thereby decreasing the energy consumption and resulting pollution associated with transport.

Our Buying Policy ensures that you can afford to eat the best of local organic produce, while supporting local farming families and ensuring food security for generations to come.

  • What are food miles?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

'Food miles' is a term that refers to the distance food is transported from the time of its production until it reaches the consumer. The Fair Food organic set box delivery scheme works to minimise this distance to help reduce our carbon footprint, which includes carbon pollution and other wasteful losses in the supply chain.

  • What is seasonal produce?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Seasonal organic produce includes fruit and vegetables that grow well in the current climatic conditions in Victoria at any point in time. Eating seasonal produce helps you enjoy fresh food at its tastiest, freshest and most affordable.

Local seasonal produce is usually of higher quality and nutritional value as it has not been transported long distances, placed in lengthy cold storage or produced using energy intensive and artificial environments.

Eating seasonal produce is better for the environment as it reduces the embodied energy of your food, as the methods for producing and distributing ‘out of season’ food items all year round are incredibly inefficient.

  • What is that strange looking vegetable (or is it a fruit) in my box?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Each week we pack a variety of available seasonal fruit and vegetables into our seasonal set boxes. If you do not recognise a particular item in your box be brave and explore. We have our own Recipes Page, where each recipe is tagged according to ingredients and seasonality.

We also regularly send out Readers' Digestibles with every set box highlighting a particular seasonal fruit or vegetable. It always contains a photo of the item and an interesting, easy-to-make and yummy recipe to try out. The featured produce may not be in your box that week - depending on which size and type box you get - but rest assured you will eventually receive it in a following organic food delivery.

You can always look it up again by going to our Blog. Alternatively, search online for recipes including the fruit or vegetable you've never used before, and don't forget to submit the one you like most on our recipes page.

  • Can I meet any of the wonderful farmers who grow my produce?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

We will be organising regular farm tours to visit our valued farmers, see their hard work and appreciate our rural landscapes. This will give everyone the opportunity to thank a farmer! Information regarding farm tours will be posted on the website and in our newsletters. CERES and the Market Manager also organise similar events onsite. Please visit the main CERES Website for more info.

  • Can I not get one or two items in my box?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Again, you cannot customise the seasonal set boxes but can build your own by selecting from the "extra fruit and veg" section of the webstore.

  • 3.Ordering and payments
  • How do I become a member?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Please join by registering with a nominated username and password from our Sign Up Page. You will then be sent a confirmation link. You must click on this link to confirm your registration. Then you're all set to order!

  • How do I place an order?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Orders are placed online. Once you have logged in as a member using your login details, go to the products page to order your boxes and other groceries. When you've finished shopping, go to the checkout and pay using your credit or debit card.

  • Can I place an order over the phone instead of online?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

The easiest way to place an order is to jump online. Unfortunately, we do not offer an over-the-phone ordering service. However, if you are having trouble with the online ordering system, please feel free to call or email us at info@ceresfairfood.org.au and we can guide you through the process.

Sometimes there may be an issue processing payment for your order and you will be notified via email just after the usual cutoff time (the day and time weekly payments are processed based on which day you receive deliveries). If this happens, call or email us and we will do our best to organise a late order payment and add your order to our packing reports.

To increase the likelihood of us being able to process a late order for you, please resolve the issue signaled in the email (add funds or update card details), then email us at info@ceresfairfood.org.au with the order you would like us to put through before 10am the day after cutoff.

  • How do I pay?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

You can make payments via our online shop with your credit or debit card.

  • Can I pay without a credit/debit card?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

At this stage only credit or debit cards are accepted.

If you are not a credit card user and want to avoid using a credit card altogether, consider the option of using a debit card. A debit card provides an alternative payment method to a credit card and withdraws funds directly from either your bank account or from the remaining balance on the card.

This is a great option because you can only use money you already have and it eliminates interest rates and application nightmares. Contact your personal bank for further details on how to apply for a debit card.

  • Is it safe to use my credit card to purchase my order online?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Yes! We use an internet payment gateway through NAB which will process credit card payments securely. We are also Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) which provides website security testing.

  • How do I choose the correct size box for my needs?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

This depends on your particular household and food requirements. Things to consider include how many people you need to feed, if you are a vegetarian, how often you eat out, have often you host people for dinner, or how much produce you may grow in your own garden.

There are indications under each food box description in the webstore, giving you an idea of how many people we believe each box will feed. If you and others you feed are vegetarian, then you may find that you need to increase your box size to make it through the week. Alternatively, you can add more quantities of particular items you enjoy as an "extra" to supplement the changing contents of your seasonal set box.

For instance, if you like to eat a lot of leafy greens, consider ordering kale or salad mix as an extra to be delivered with your box.

  • Do I have to order each week?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

You do not have to order each week, our service is flexible. We understand that it can be inconvenient to join a subscription service for food, as you may decide to go away for a weekend or be eating out a lot one week.

In any case, we send out weekly email and SMS reminders to order, which you can turn on and off from your Profile Page. But if you still find it difficult to remember to order before cutoff (the day and time you must order for the coming weeks' delivery), you can make orders in advance by nominating the number of weeks ahead you would like a delivery.

All you have to do is tick the checkbox "add to cart as a standing order" located under the "add to cart" button in the webstore. A popup will come up, asking you what date you would like the first delivery, how many boxes/items you'd like each week, fortnight or monthly, and for how long you would like this to continue. Then when you checkout you can either choose to pay the full amount upfront (pay now) or pay weekly, which only deducts that weeks' amount at your usual cutoff time. Don't worry, you can always delete future orders from your My Order Page in case you have something come up and don't wish to receive your order that week.

  • How do I order extra products?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Once you have logged in as a member you can order a range of extra products including eggs, honey and soy milk, with or without a food box.

  • Can I order extra products or produce without getting a box?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

You can order extra produce and groceries from our webstore without ordering a food box. These will be delivered to the Food Host on the scheduled day in a general "extras" box or cold esky. Please check carefully that you take all your items and not another persons, keeping in mind some people order the same items as you but in different quantities.

By the end of September 2012, we will be packing all "extras" into bags or boxes, labelled with your name, to make it easier and less likely that someone will accidentally take one of your ordered items.

In the meantime, there will be a checksheet at the Food Host on a clipboard, which you will need to sign off on. If you have any doubts, all the products you ordered that week will be listed under your name. If it's not on the checksheet, your order was not processed or paid for. If an item on the checksheet is not there to be picked up, use the Report an Issue with your Order form and we'll provide a refund or store credit.

  • What if I am not happy with my order?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

From time to time things go missing or something else is amiss. We understand this can be a total pain because it’s food and we know you need to eat!

So, if your box goes missing we'll send you a fresh one to your home the next day for FREE! If it's something smaller, we'll apply a store credit to be used against future purchases. And of course, if you prefer, you can request that your credit or debit card be refunded instead.

Just fill out the Report an Issue with my Order Form before 10am the day following a delivery, if you wish to have the missing box delivered to your home at no extra charge. You can also use this form to let us know if there was anything else missing or not up to scratch and to ask for a refund/store credit.

  • 4.Collecting and Deliveries
  • Where and when do I pick up my order?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Please pick up your order from the Food Host location you selected. Once you have registered as a member and joined a specific Food Host a welcome email will be sent to you outlining location, opening day and times, as well as important instructions and other details. PLEASE READ THIS EMAIL CAREFULLY.

You will also receive an email update if you change your Food Host at any stage. It can help to add a calendar reminder to pick up, including the address of your Food Host. If you're ever in doubt, check the invoice sent for that weeks' order, or log in to your online account and go to your Profile Page.

  • Where are the Food Host Locations?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Please check our Food Host locations map for up-to-date information.

  • How do I choose/change my Food Host?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

You should choose a Food Host that is in open at a convenient time and location for you, either near your house, workplace or your children’s school. When you register as a member you will be able to choose your Food Host location. This can be changed if necessary or when a more convenient location becomes available.

You can change your Food Host in two simple ways. To change the pick up location for outstanding orders that have not yet been processed you can change your Food Host for specific orders from the My Orders Page. Simply click on the delivery location field to choose a new location for that delivery. This will not affect future delivery locations and this is a good option to use if it's a one-off change.

To permanently change to another Food Host, go to your Profile Page and click "change Food Host."

You will receive an email notification of the change, with your new Food Hosts details, including opening time and day.

  • When do I pick up my order?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

This will depend on your Food Host location. Once you have registered as a member and joined a specific Food Host, a welcome email will be sent to you outlining instructions and other important details. This information is also on every invoice we send to you and it also listed on your Profile Page whenever you log in.

  • What if I cannot pick up my order on the allocated day?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

Arrangements will need to be made directly with your Food Host. Once you have registered and joined a specific Food Host a welcome email will be sent to you outlining instructions and other important information including the contact details for your Food Host location. If you cannot find this email or you couldn't get through to your Food Host, email us at info@ceresfairfood.org.au and we'll do our best to resolve the issue.

  • What if my box is not there or there are any other problems?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

From time to time things go missing or something else is amiss. We understand this can be a total pain because it’s food and we know you need to eat!

So, if your box goes missing we'll send it to your home the next day for FREE! If it's something smaller, we'll apply a store credit to be used against future purchases. And of course, if you prefer, you can request that your credit or debit card be refunded instead.

Just fill out the Report an Issue with your Order Form before 10am the day following a delivery, if you wish to have a fresh box delivered to your home at no extra charge. You can also use this form to let us know if there was anything else missing or not up to scratch, and we can provide a refund/store credit.

  • What if there are no Food Hosts in my area?

    Rohan2015-04-07 11:03:36

It may just be that we have overlooked a region. It may also be that we have not yet been able to find a suitable Food Host. Whatever the reason, we're always open to suggestions of where to open new Food Hosts. Feel free to email foodhosts@ceresfairfood.org.au to request that we look into it. Don't forget to give us your postcode and the nearest landmark so we can ascertain the specific area you are inquiring about.

Alternatively, our carbon neutral home delivery service will be launched in September 2012 and this my be the perfect solution to still get a CERES Fair Food box in an environmentally friendly manner. To keep in the loop about Food Host openings and the launch of our new home delivery service, please sign up to our newsletter.
