What to do with onions…

Chris' newsletter

29th July 2013

A few nifty ideas on what to do with onions to help you get through any excess stock, which may be building up this Winter.

  1. Make a batch of French Onion Soup.
  2. Use onion halves to remove rust from knives
  3. Remove nasty smells in your bathroom or fridge. Just pop half an onion into a bowl with a little water, and it’ll soak up whatever offensive smells are keeping you up at night.
  4. Use onion to soothe a bee or ant bite. Obviously if you’re allergic, seeking urgent medical attention is a must.
  5. Animals, bugs and insects aren’t too fond of onion juice. The smell is not really to their liking, so we can use this to our advantage in the garden to protect plants.

Instructions: In a blender, puree 4 onions, 2 cloves garlic, 2 tablespoons cayenne pepper, and 1 litre of water. Set the mixture aside. Now dilute 2 tablespoons of soap flakes in 7.5 litres of water. Pour in the contents of your blender, shake or stir well, and you have a potent, environment-friendly solution to spray on your plants.
